Freshet!
What a concert that was! The title means ‘the flood of a river from heavy rain or melted snow’, and the program was full of music that fully reflected the theme, with many varying styles including Elgar, Carly Simon, Vaughan Williams and Alan Bullard.
We were be joined by St Simon’s Catholic Primary School Choir who followed the theme with three lovely pieces that delighted the appreciative audience. St Simon’s choir also joined us in a performance of Alan Bullard’s Welcome Spring, a piece that was commissioned for the Maia Singers and the Stockport Youth Choir in 2005. An recording of the 2005 performance can be heard here
We also had three delightful Debussy piano pieces beautifully played by our accompanist Anne Rees.
As if that wasn’t enough, we were also joined by Alana Howes and Marla Broadway on violins to accompany The Snow by Elgar. Many thanks to them for their wonderful playing and also to the Music Department of the University of Manchester for allowing them to join us.
Carols by Candlelight 2025
Another super Christmas concert, that included While Mary Slept by Helena Paish. Helena won the BBC your Chorister of the year in 2014 aged 14 and has since won the BBC Proms Composition competition and the BBC Proms Inspire Competition for young composers in 2019.
Come and Sing with The Maia
We had a brilliant Come and Sing day in October as a way to introduce our new MD Henry Page. We welcomed more than 20 visitors who enjoyed learning some of Mozart’s Requiem as well as some other choral classics that are part of our varied catalogue. There was plenty of cake as well!
‘Thank you for the Music’. In front of a capacity audience made up of our faithful followers, new friends and many ex members of the choir (some who had travelled a very long way to see us) we performed some of our personal favourites as a fitting farewell to our retiring MD John Pomphrey. After over 50 years at the helm of The Maia Singers there are many people who are thankful to John for the Music he has helped us create.
Our ‘Jubilate’ concert at Wilmslow United Reformed Church Wilmslow was another great performance by the choir and soloist, Sophie Billington
Details of the pieces we performed are on our Previous Concert Programmes page.
